General Information:
Established as a village in 1811, the town was named after a resident's hometown of Winchester, Virginia and the Ohio and Erie Canal that ran through the city. The Canal played an important role in the shaping of the city's history. As a stop on the canal route, many businesses set up shop in the area to take advantage of the stream of visitors along the canal. With four historic districts, many businesses and homes from that period can be viewed in the city today.
